This February event is being brought to you by Erika of treesweater fame, Lisa of the big pile of snow fame, and me, of ill repute. If you click on their names you can see their posts on this subject.
Once chance post by Erika on Monday, one chance comment by me later that day, and shazaam! this idea was born. In 25 words or less:
anyone else who is interested to
reduce the amount of trash
produced by our/their household.
The ultimate goal is Zero Waste, but as Erika says, Any reduction is HUGE!
Although I am pretty sure I cannot achieve zero waste, that doesn't mean I cannot reduce the amount of waste this household produces. I have declared February to be my reduce-reuse-recycle month. We already recycle glass, cans, plastics, newspapers, magazines, and office paper, and I compost during the summer months. Let's see what improvements on that I can achieve.
It was the Gloucestershire challenge that sparked this adventure.
Since we were rather taken by surprise by the Gloucestershire thing, we decided to give ourselves a few days to warm up; thus, February = challenge month. Ericka has a *rules* page here, but really, the only rule is to try. No monitoring sheets, no prizes, just our own efforts.
Y'all will most certainly have some good ideas for the rest of us -- put 'em out there! Promote the idea on your own blog! Download the banners and buttons of your choice to your own servers and put 'em out there!
As someone very wise once said, The journey is the destination. We can but try, but trying will get us closer to where we want to go.
(Banners and buttons by Erika and Matthew (#2 son).)
I love this! I will blog about this tomorrow. I don't produce much trash as it is, so I'm not sure if I could produce less, but I am willing to try.
Although, I do have a weirdo questions. You knew that, though, right? ;^)

That's a terrific idea and I will embrace it. I do all the same recycling/composting as you and that has made a difference, but I know that there is MUCH more to be done. Great project!

I bet you can get CursingMama to do this! :) I think I'm doing pretty well on this...

Well, with rules like that, I think we could cut back even more. The compost heap is a great idea. We had one, but it was located in a truly dumb place. The only problem is greenery for it.

Great idea. We do recycle all the normal stuff and now I'll set up a bin for the #5 plastics. Had no idea teachers would want the Styrofoam trays. So is it better to put tissue down the toilet into the sewer system than putting it into the landfill?

I sort through trash at work. Being a janitor, I get special privileges like that. Snide remarks aside, I pull out as much paper as I can, and obvious cans and bottles. And recycle here, not like I'm ever here any more.
