Wisconsin is the Dairy State. Quick, tell me a breed of dairy cow.
Very good. And what does a Holstein look like?
Yes, they look like a Gateway computer box with four legs and a head. This one is being groomed for her appearance in the judging ring.
There are other breeds of dairy cows, though, like the Brown Swiss. I am partial to them, mainly because my great-grandfather came from Switzerland; there is little town there that bears our name.
I think they are pretty, too, gentle-looking beasts.
I wonder if they get nervous before judging. Bovine stage fright, as it were.
There were horses and goats and probably pigs and chickens, too, but I missed them. I did see a few other animals though.
According to the sign above the pen, this is a Scottish Hereford sheep. It was too busy eating to show me its papers.
Not all the animals were what one might expect at the fair, i.e., domesticated farm animals. Behold Mr. Porcupine. I took about a dozen pictures of him and was unable to hold the camera steady for a single one. Sorry; think of it as a *design element*.
This little guy was called a ferfox or maybe a fennic fox. I think he has house elf ears.
